Outreach > IntroductionWelcome to the Molecular Sciences Institute Outreach Website! Navigate the links above to find MSI’s internship and research opportunities for high school, undergraduate, and post doctorate students. You will also discover useful genomics/genetics resources for every education level. Whether you are a middle school student interested in learning about science fairs, a high school student seeking a summer internship, an undergraduate pursuing genetics research, or a Ph.D. considering research options, we hope that this website will spark your interests in the remarkable field of genomics. What is Genomics?
Genomics is the study of the full genetic map of life that is specific to every species and, due to genetic variation, unique to every organism. Genomics utilizes a variety of techniques for obtaining actual genomic data in the form of nucleotide sequences (sequencing), as well as studying the effects and functions of discrete portions of the genome at the gene level. Why Study Genomics? Genomics is an example of predictive biology. This means that by understanding the genome(s) of a species or species', we can understand the causes of its behavior, interaction with its environment and eventually predict the effect on that species of various stimuli. Even at the cellular level we may at some point be able to predict the effects of a drug or an environmental factor that may allow us to create cures for diseases and to understand what's causing them. If at any time you wish to return to this page, the "Outreach" link on the navigation bar at left will always return you here.
