MSI Post-Ph.D. Fellowship in Genomics & Computational Biology

The Center for Quantitative Genome Function (CQGF) seeks Research Fellows in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, and computer science to work on the Alpha Project, an interdisciplinary effort in genomics. This fellowship is open to exceptional minority scientists including recent graduates, post-docs, academic faculty and researchers currently working in industrial settings. The fellowship includes a travel and equipment budget. The fellow will be expected to work primarily at MSI, but will have the opportunity to rotate in other Center member labs.

The CQGF combines genomic and computational research to make predictive models of biological systems. Work at the Center focuses on the Alpha project, which was established to model a prototypic signal transduction pathway in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (bakers yeast). The Alpha Project brings together a team of investigators from various disciplines to work on an initiative that combines rigorous, quantitative genomic experimentation with computer modeling. The core facility is the Molecular Sciences Institute (MSI) located in downtown Berkeley, CA. MSI is an intensively interdisciplinary environment that brings together mathematicians, genomic scientists, physicists and social scientists to answer fundamental questions about the function of biological systems. Other CQGF members include: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology; California Institute of Technology; and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Research conducted during the fellowship will be determined based upon the fellow’s expertise and interests. In addition to conducting research, the fellow will be able to make use of MSI programs and external programs to develop professional skills such as grant writing, lab management and budgeting.

Salaries are commensurate with the candidates experience and competitive for the California Bay Area.

To Apply: Applicants should submit a Curriculum vitae, along with a cover letter explaining their background, research experience, short/long-term goals, and what they expect to contribute to and learn from the Alpha Project. Cover letters, research statements, and recommendations should be addressed to Dr. Roger Brent, and sent by post or email to: Leonore Reiser, Ph.D., The Molecular Sciences Institute, 2168 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley,CA. 94704. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

The program is funded by a grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).
