Life on earth is astonishing in its variety of form, function,
and habitat. Dramatic evolutionary innovation may be
achieved through many means - for instance, changes in transcriptional
regulation of existing genes, or large-scale shuffling of protein
domains with erstwhile-non-coding DNA to form entirely new
genes. However, a large proportion of evolutionary changes
on small time-scales falls in the category of subtle changes
in protein sequence. I am currently studying the role
that these subtle changes play in effecting phenotypic innovation
in multiple yeast species.
